YEAR FIVE | A GRATITUDE POST

December 31, 2021

2021…well another shit-storm…who knew!?!

Honestly the last thing I want to be doing in the haze between Christmas and New Years is to come up with things that I’m supposed to be thankful for this year. I have just had the two biggest weeks of my business, running right up to Christmas Eve. And right now we are on our first trip away in our caravan and I wanna get down to the beach.

But, alas, I must admit I LOVE reading through my past years’ gratitude posts, even from last year. It’s like rereading your childhood diary, so many things that would potentially have been forgotten, especially after the couple of years we’ve had.

Okay let’s get this done. Here’s what I’m grateful for in 2021.

…getaways. I snuck away three times this year (would have been more if it wasn’t for lockdown), and we were especially lucky to sneak in a weekend at Falls Creek in-between lockdown 5 & 6. A change of scenery, fresh air and some exercise (plus a massage thrown in for good measure!) was just what we needed. How lucky we are to have so many beautiful destinations at our doorstep to visit!

…our caravan. Like most people (especially us Victorians) we spent way too much of 2020 in lockdown which had us craving a trip away, but with the current climate (AKA global pandemic) we knew we’d be staying local and thought we’d give #vanlife a go. With the lengthy delays (and massive price tags), we quickly realised we’d need to purchase an oldy to do up. Well, turns out our 50+ year old van had other ideas, and threw herself onto the road and ended things on her own terms. We were literally left with a trailer. Over the course of the year my clever husband with the help of very generous friends and family built a brand new caravan. It has been a super fun project to *watch* (I’ll happily admit I had little-to-no involvement in the build), and having something to look forward to helped us get through the lockdowns this year. We are currently on our first trip/trial run and posting from the van. It really is a dream come true!

…vaccines. Umm, how freaking amazing is science?! I am so thankful there are people who are much cleverer than me, so passionate and committed to developing vaccines, a key step to help reduce hospitalisations and deaths, and move forward into a safer and healthier 2021 and beyond. I am especially thankful both our kids will be receiving their first doses in coming weeks, I will breathe a sigh of relief once they are both double dosed.

…my new little nephew! His name is Oakley and he is quite possibly the sweetest little baby in existence. He arrived early during the lockdown and I was so mad at the world for ruining this time for us, but a couple of caregiving trips and cuddles later, the bitterness quickly faded into undeniable love. I have never loved a baby so much (aside from my two of course!) and would do anything for him.

…Providoor. Because Uber Eats was so 2020. During our extended 6.0 lockdown, our regular takeout options just didn’t cut it. If you haven’t tried it before and you’re wanting something a little fancy but stuck at home (I’m sure we all will be in and out of iso over the coming months!), then I highly recommend giving it a crack. La Tortilleria was my fave!

…choosing myself. Sparing you the nitty gritty, I had the opportunity to do something for myself this year that was a really difficult decision to make. It had been a long time coming and I’d been afraid to do it mainly out of fear of what others would think, what the fallout may be. I am naturally not comfortable advocating for myself (is anyone?), but I knew it was the best thing for me no matter how hard it was. A few months later and it feels so bloody good to have that behind me and to continue down the path of healing and moving on.

…my community. Gosh it’s a good one! The support from my close-knit and wider community is always felt through the good times and bad. I have especially connected with four other women who have been a godsend this past year. You know who you are and I appreciate you and our chats (and accidental video calls!) so much! Thank you.

…my clients. I say it all the time and I’ll say it again; I truly have the BEST clients! Another year with months of no work and I’m still blown away by the support and generosity of the families who book me. I also had three days of mini sessions which were a thrill to do! And to top it off my wonderful returning clients…one who I just did my sixth session with. You are the BEST and I am so so thankful to all of you!

…my family. What a year we’ve had. Lots of good times and plenty more disappointment too. But the kids killed it at online learning this year and I couldn’t be more proud of them. And Matt who goes along with my ridiculous ideas like building a brand new caravan. Thankful for your support always.

…and finally I’m thankful for the year ahead. If we’ve learnt anything from the past two years it’s to lower our expectations when heading into a new year lol. But, I am quick to forget and staying hopeful that 2022 will be the best one yet. With a caravan in tow, the best friends I could ask for and a family tighter than we’ve ever been…I bet it’s gonna be a good one!

Happy 2022. Can’t wait to do it with you.
